The Mohrfield Holsteins milking herd is kept in a state of the art comfort barn. Built in 1995 it consists of 46 large comfort stalls and seven box stalls. The cows are milked in the barn with surge equipment and kept cool with evaporative cooling. This barn is probably one of the most unique barns in the country.

Feeding

The milking herd is fed a TMR (Total Mix Ration) with the emphasis on fiber. The ration consists of dry hay, corn silage, haylage, ground shelled corn and a commercial protein mix plus vitamins and minerals. A very simple ration. All feed is home grown with the exception of the protein, vitamins, and minerals. We firmly believe that keeping as much hay as possible in the mix eliminates most herd health problems such as sore feet, DA's  (Displaced Abomason), upset stomachs and udder edema.

Showing

Each year the Mohrfield Holstein's show string travels to about five major shows, the World Dairy Expo being the most important. Showing is very important to us as it enables us to advertise the quality of cattle through competition and the personal relationships we make as we meet prospective buys at these shows.

Breeding Philosophy

At Mohrfield Holsteins we continually strive to breed the better cow. The past few years we have added some outstanding individuals to our herd to lay the foundation for the next generation and the generation after that. Through very careful matings and aggressive ET (Embryo Transfer) work we are excited about our future. One needs to remember that once the next generation is born a very well managed calf rearing program needs to be in place to achieve success.
